Johns Hopkins University

You may immediately think of medicine and healthcare when you consider Baltimore’s prestigious Johns Hopkins University, but this elite school is also home to one of the most robust electrical engineering programs in the nation. Located in Maryland, Johns Hopkins offers a uniquely designed schedule for electrical engineering students. Students enrolled in this program attend part time to earn a Master of Science degree.

Johns Hopkins offers a collection of specialized tracks to completion of an electrical engineering degree, including solid state electronics, RF and microwave engineering, signal processing and more. Courses range for the traditional electrical engineering standards and up to date programs on the cutting-edge technology that can provide students with an edge when it comes to securing a job in the field. Error control coding, computer architecture and human/robotic interaction are just a few of the options electrical engineering students can focus on at Johns Hopkins.

Johns Hopkins offers one of the largest and most successful electrical engineering programs in the nation; as a result, admission is competitive. While this program is designed to support those who are already working in the field of electrical engineering, allowing for part time enrollment, the degree does need to be completed within five years. Students can work and go to school at the same time.

The Master of Science in electrical and computer engineering program at Johns Hopkins University requires the completion of ten courses over a five year period at about $4,440 per graduate class.

University of Virginia

Electrical Engineering degrees are offered online and on-site, making UVA an ideal choice for those who either already live in the area or those who wish to work and learn at the same time. The master’s degree program at UVA requires learners to already hold an undergraduate degree, but it does not have to be in electrical engineering; other engineers are invited to apply.

UVA accepts credits from other universities and programs; the electrical engineering program requires 30 credits for graduation and can be completed in under 5 years. Students are required to complete the program within 7 years.

Coursework offers an opportunity to learn about the latest technology, trends and best practices, resulting in graduates who are in-demand by companies of all sizes.

While this is an online program, current Virginia residents do save money – you’ll save about 35% off your tuition if you already live in Virginia. You will need strong GRE scores, a completed undergraduate degree and professional references to gain admission; 27 to 30% of students who apply are admitted to this popular program.

This is a competitive program; about 16% of all applicants are admitted. To apply, you’ll need to have completed your Electrical Engineering undergrad degree; this must come from a school or program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. You do not have to provide a GRE score, but a solid performance as an undergrad with a minimum GPA of 3.0 is a must.

The online Master of Engineering at UVA requires 30 credits of coursework for completion.In state, the tuition cost is $670 per credit hour plus additional fees. Out of state, the cost is $,101 per credit hour plus additional fees.

University of Florida

This prestigious school is located in Gainesville Florida, but offers a program that can be completed online in as little as 24 months. The convenience of online education combined with the fast-tracked nature of the program make the Master’s of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) a popular, enduring choice for those wishing to move ahead in their chosen career.

The University of Florida offers one of the largest Electrical Engineering programs in the nation; students completing degrees here are courted by large brands and uniquely poised for success. Students can choose from up to 10 specialized areas and take classes that cover both the traditional details needed for electrical engineering and the latest, up and coming technology. Intelligent systems, radar, virtual computers and pattern recognition are just a few of the options offered by this robust online program.

Since this is an online program, students can work at the same time as they learn, and they do not have to head to the campus each day. While students come from all over the nation to attend this highly regarded program, in state students get a significant price break, even if they attend online.

This is a highly competitive, well-regarded program, resulting in a lot of competition for entry. Completion of an undergraduate degree in engineering and a minimum 3.0 GPA are required for entry; about 48% of applicants are accepted into the program.

The University of Florida offers both an online Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering and an online Master of Engineering in Electrical and Computer Engineering. For in state students, the tuition cost is $501.38 per credit hour inclusive of fees. For out of state students, the cost is $725.75 per credit hour inclusive of fees.

Georgia Institute of Technology

Electrical engineers that want to earn an advanced degree for career advancement or an increase of income will find their perfect match with the online master’s program at the Georgia Institute of Technology. This is one of the largest, most robust programs in the nation ,offering over 100 courses, 110 faculty members and almost 20 research facilities.

Georgia Tech offers both a thesis option and a non-thesis version for the master’s in engineering program. The degree must be completed within 6 years of admission and 30 credits are required to graduate. Georgia Tech is also one of the only top schools offering video game design and mixed reality design options for students.

Online learning keeps things flexible and ensures that students can work and learn at the same time. With a 30-40 percent acceptance rate, Georgia Tech is more accessible than some of the other top schools. The program also does not charge higher rates for out of state students, making it an ideal choice for those living and working in other locations. The high graduation rate and robust course offerings make GIT an ideal choice for those interested in technology-based tracks and with a need to stay informed about the industry.

The online Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech costs $1,100 per credit hour (each course is 3 credit hours). Students should also expect to pay additional fees.

Stanford University

Stanford’s electrical engineering master’s degree program requires 45 credits to complete; this is significantly higher than many of the other programs on our list, which require 30 credits for the same degree. Despite the prestigious university and possibilities for graduates, this is one of the least expensive programs offered for an electrical engineering degree. It is also one of the few programs that does not charge higher tuition rates for out of state students.

If you have an excellent transcript, solid background, great test scores and professional references, the electrical engineering program at Stanford is an ideal choice. Students completing this degree will find many different opportunities for advancement and excellent earning potential.

The online Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at Stanford requires the completion of 45 units over 3-5 years at $1,352 per quarter unit. Typically, each graduate course is 3-5 quarter units. A five quarter unit master’s level course, for example, would cost $6,760. Students should also expect to pay additional fees.
