The Best Bioengineering Degree Programs

Johns Hopkins University

They can also opt to participate in a hybrid version of the program where they take some of their coursework on-campus.
The program emphasizes real-world knowledge beneficial to students throughout their careers. They also gain in-depth knowledge of medical physiology, which is essential when having discussions with clinicians. Students also learn how to apply engineering principles when seeking solutions to medical and physiological challenges.
Those seeking an MS can choose from three different areas of focus:

- Imaging — Trains students on using data from different imaging technique in the development of two- and three-dimensional images

Anyone interested in applying to the Master of Science in Applied Biomedical Engineering program must have taken a mathematics course involving ordinary differential equations as well as a calculus-based physics course, including heat and energy, mechanics, elementary quantum concepts, and electricity and magnetism.

Georgia Institute of Technology
The Georgia Institute of Technology, or Georgia Tech, offers students the opportunity to obtain either a bachelor or master’s in biomedical engineering through the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering. Please note that online courses to complete specific degree requirements are only available for the bachelor’s degree. All courses for the master’s programs must be taken on-campus.
Obtaining a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering provides graduates with a variety of career options. They can move into regulatory fields like healthcare, hospital administration, and medical field engineering. Students can also opt to enter the private sector and work for a startup or even create their own company.
Students must meet the following requirements to enter the Master of Biomedical Engineering program:
- Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited engineering program
- Have professional experience working in an engineering-related role
The program takes two years to complete over four semesters. Students must complete 21 hours of course work in addition to nine thesis hours.
Georgia Tech also offers the Master of Biomedical Innovation and Development degree for biomedical technology professionals. The one-year program gives students practical clinical experience within the Atlanta biomedical industry.

University of Utah

Washington University in St. Louis
Washington University makes undergraduate and graduate degrees available to those interested in biomedical engineering. The curriculum for BS-Biomedical Engineering students provides the technical proficiency and skills needed to pursue a career in biomedical engineering or another related field. They can also choose to move on to other professional degree designations like medicine or law.

Master of Engineering in Bioengineering students must complete 30 credit hours covering subjects like engineering skills, biomedical product development, and master design.
Tuition for undergraduate students came to around $52,400 during the 2018-2019 academic year. Costs for graduate students came to about $54,250 during the 2019-2020 academic year or $27,125 per semester.
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Prospective students looking to build or further their career in biomedical engineering can pursue either an undergraduate or graduate degree option at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The B.S. in BIOE prepares students for industry jobs working as engineers in manufacturing, designing medical devices, quality control, and many other roles. Professionals looking to move up in their field can pursue a Ph.D., MS, or M-Eng degree.
Those students accepted into the Ph.D. program who hold a B.S. must complete 96 hours of graduate-level courses. Students who currently hold an M.S. degree must complete 64 hours of coursework. All courses must be taken within seven calendar years of the student’s initial registration.
Students looking to obtain an MS-BME in bioengineering with a thesis must complete 32 credit hours. Students who choose a non-thesis track must complete 40 credit hours. The M-Eng path can be completed over one year and does not require a thesis.
Undergraduate tuition for Illinois residents came to around $18,000 for the 20019-2020 academic year, while the costs for non-residents came to approximately $35,000. Prices for the graduate-level engineering programs came to about $45,000, including a required $5,900 program fee.
